Blog Post: The Role of Time Tracking Software in Making Your Organization Profitable

It's ironic - sometimes the employees who are the best at their jobs can be the worst at accurately filling out their timesheets, recording time worked when they're supposed to (e.g., hourly, daily) - or even making these entries at all! If you're a project manager, this disconnect forces you into the unpleasant position of being a "timesheet detective". Timesheet entries are missing - or sometimes the entire timesheet is missing, so you have to hunt down the responsible employee(s). Once you've collected the absent billing facts, even more of your day is spent logging this information. Later, after invoices have been sent, clients call for clarification regarding a vague or unclear line item and you lose additional time answering questions, revising ... read more

Forum Post: RE: Migration fron AX 2012 R2 to NAV

The process is quite straight-forward, however not so typical :-). You would need to transfer the opening balances at some cut-off date from AX to NAV. This is relatively easy accounting process itself, you can export the open balances to Excel from AX and import them to NAV. The difficulty here is to synchronize the chart of accounts and analytical structure, as when you transfer financial data from one system to another this is usually a challenge to map them together. You thus do no need to know much about the (SQL) table structure as such for both systems - rather to be able to operate with finance data efficiently. Another challenge is to analyze and streamline business processes the way that users and your business itself will operate efficiently. This is usually done via fit-gap analysis where you indicate the gaps that NAV standard functionality does not support out-of-the-box, and then decide either to change the process or go for customization. Remember there is nothing in AX that you cannot develop in NAV, but you should be very careful in deciding to customize the standard to avoid unnecessary changes.

If you have a file with the Item No. and Vendor No. then use the dataport to update the records, if you retrieving the vendor no. from other record or it is common then you can use a processing report to update. There is also a tool called Universal Dataport which you can use to update the records, try to run it first in TEST community.dynamics.com/.../introducing-the-dms-universal-dataport

Don't use the SQL to update the data because you will be missing the business logic it is not good practice, you can create an quick processing report to udpate the data. Do you want to update Purchase Line with Header Order Date or Vice versa, the standard NAV when creating lines will retrieve the order date from the header and will update lines when you update the header.

Blog Post: Upgrading a Product? Follow these Steps Prior to doing so!

Upgrading a Product If you're upgrading a  product or customization, here are some important steps to take. Before upgrading a product to ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible . Start GP, 365 (AX or NAV), go to  Customization Maintenance window, and check for any Modified Forms and Modified Reports. If any appear, select them all and export them to a Package file. Exit. (After performing the upgrade, use Customization Maintenance window again to import the Modified Forms and Modified Reports from the same Package File.) If a Citrix or Terminal Server is being used for GP, 365 (AX or NAV), shut down and restart those servers. Make a full backup of the Microsoft Dynamics folder, including subfolders. Plus all other files and folders referenced in the files Dynamics.set and Dex.ini. If a package file was created for any Modified Forms and Modified Reports, back that up too. Make a full backup of the DYNAMICS database and all Company databases in SQL server. For the product, delete the three dictionary files (.DIC) from the Installation Machine, whichever ones are present. Even if the product dictionary file is present, the Modified Forms dictionary file and the Modified Reports dictionary file may not be. (The names and locations of these files can be found in the Dynamics.set file, which is located in the Microsoft Dynamics GP, 365 (AX or NAV) folder). Open the Dynamics.set file (located in the Microsoft Dynamics GP, 365 (AX or NAV) folder) in Notepad. Reduce the product count on the first line by one. Find the line containing the name of the product. Remove this line and the line above it, which is the four-digit product number. Find and remove the three lines pertaining to the dictionary files for the product. Save Dynamics.set and exit Notepad. Forum Post: How to determine UnknownSpnHint correct value in web.config in NAV 2016 Web Client pointing to a load balancer

Hi everyone, I would like to ask you these questions because we have the following problem. We have an installation with two nav boxes that run the nav server instances and in front of them there is an application load balancer and also two web server boxes exist for the web client. Both web.configs are mapped to the ip of the application load balancer(obviously the two nav server machines have the same nav server instances, are using the same ports, configuration in order the load balancer to transmit requests to both nav machines. We have seen that UnknownSPNhint has different navserver values between the two web servers, the one has application load balancer ip and the other one the fully qualified domain name of one nav server box. Microsoft says in MSDN for web.config that for the web client this value isn't automatically updated but we have seen that web.config is being changed from time to time for this setting. The default NoSPN value always remains the same, but the NavServer is changing in the net.tcp://NavServer:Port/ServerInstance/Service part of the setting. Also if NoSPN is the value of the setting, does it make any difference and the ServicePrincipalNameRequired = False, will the different NavServer affect the web client? Thanks in advance and any help is much appreciated

Blog Post: NAV 2018 Web Client Improvements

With new Dynamics 2018, there is a lot of improvement in a Web Client. One of the first improvements is availability of Print Preview for non-Internet Explorer browsers (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Safari). In these cases, the Preview button didn’t appear on the request pages of reports. Now it exists. We have possibilities to change size of previewed document, use “select text” or “pan the document”, as well as download document or print it from preview. On the other side, now we can use Web Client as tool for user personalization. Of course, when we change something, it can be viewed in Windows Client as well, but place for configuration is Web Client. I think that Web Client is good enough and it can be used as the main client (as we have in Dynamics 365 ‘Tenerife’); of course, some of the features are still better in Windows Client, but this client can be used in regular daily business (I know some of my colleagues will not agree with me, but I think this is more related with our habits). But I expect more and more new features in Web Client (we already saw future UX on Directions). In some features, I more prefer Web Client in comparison with Windows Client (example is Ribbon on documents, where we have all actions for lines in the main ribbon). OK, there is a still some limitations and you can find them on the following links for both, NAV 2018 and NAV 2017.
