While Aleksandar's solution would 'work', I don't think I will implement it, because the batch numbers are associated only with the output and not the Production Order.
I will try instead to drop the batch number completely and split quantities across new production order line numbers where required. This can be done at the planning worksheet level (splitting SO line quantities into smaller Production order line chunks), or within our Data capture app (when a run is prematurely finished) etc.
